Blaming India (and Indians generally) has unfortunately become a thing in the Western world of late, so the ‘mother of all trade deals signed by Prime Minister Modi and President of the European Commission, Ursula von de Leyen, will come intense under scrutiny, especially from the ethno-nationalist right on the talent mobility clauses. India’s population surplus means its domestic economy cannot absorb the amount of workers coming into the market every year. Many countries in the EU - including Germany - have precisely the
opposite problem, opening the opportunity of taking advantage of
US turn against H-1B visas to acquire Indian talent that might’ve once gone elsewhere. But ‘the people’ don’t seem to like it and this will produce downstream effects in the politics (see Trump). Anyway,
migrant blaming is the distraction technique we all need to be more aware of.
