Attempts to de-bias AI lead us to an uncomfortable realisation - most of the Internet is English, and most of that English has been written by US / UK sources. As content creators seek wider audiences, so even non-native language users prefer English in order to extend reach, Anglicanising the Internet even more. The outcome of all of this is that AI is making us all more American. Linguistic diversity is hugely important - we really do see the world differently when we speak different languages and I suspect this is one of the reasons why no less a figure than Jenson Huang keeps promoting ‘sovereign AI’ - the idea that every country, language community, company and even individual should have their own AI, rather than the Sam Altman vision of a single monolithic service which everyone in the world has to end up subscribing to.
