WORKFORCE AUTOMATION
Issue #467
1 Oct 2025

Historians and translators may be the first to go not because their work is easy to automate, but because the interpretive element of their labor has always been invisible or, when made visible, dismissed as odious human bias.

‘Human value added’ is often (maybe conditionally?) intangible and because we cannot see it, we cannot measure it and therefore run the risk of designing it out of work. This short essay - from a translator of Soviet science fiction - brilliantly describes this dilemma. It’s a must read.
