With the late Friday night announcement by Executive Order that employers of H-1B visa holders now need to pay $100,000 per year, per employee, it looks like it’s suddenly over for one of the most well travelled routes of legal immigration into the United States. Typically timed for maximum disruptiveness this EO unleashes chaos into the tech sector, impacting thousands of companies and maybe hundreds of thousands of families. All systems inevitably become
exploited over time and reform to H-1B may well necessary, but
unnecessary cruelty is not. From the TA / HR side, we can anticipate more job flight (expect offshoring tax soon to prevent this...) so an increase of international hiring, and also a surge of US domiciled tech staff who now may be highly motivated and/or legally obliged to suddenly migrate elsewhere. Probably going to need to do a Brainfood Live on this. Official reading
