UK becoming the sick man of Europe is often blamed on Brexit or Covid but perhaps the groundwork for it was laid in the government response to the Great Financial Crisis, a decade long period of austerity which throttled economic growth, denuded state capacity and underinvested in critical infrastructure - energy, food, transport - which is all now coming home to roost.
